Potassium permanganate is blackish purple, elongated prismatic crystals or particles with a blue metallic luster; odorless; explosive when in contact with certain organic or easily oxidizable materials, soluble in water, lye, slightly soluble in methanol, acetone, sulfuric acid, molecular formula KMnO4, molecular weight 158.03400. melting point 240°C, stable but contact with flammable materials may cause fires. Substances to avoid include reducing agents, strong acids, organic materials, flammable materials, peroxides, alcohols and chemically active metals.
